There is a report from The National Highway Safety Administration says that 94% of car crashes are caused by human mistakes.
And according to The World Health Organization every year the lives of more than 1.25 million people are cut short as a result of a road traffic crash. Between 20 and 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, with many incurring a disability as a result of their injury, so is the Self Driving Cars are going to offer a solution because it’s going to reduce the human mistakes or it’s the other way around.
At the beginning let’s know how the Self Driving Cars actually work:
these vehicles can sense their environment and navigate around obstacles, obey traffic laws and reach a preselected destination — even rerouting due to traffic, accidents or construction — by way of built-in cameras, radar, sonar, GPS and infrared sensors.
And experts say that the Self Driving Cars are going to hit the roads a few years from now, not after a long time as some people think, and they also think that by 2020 there will be 1 million Self Driving Cars on the roads, and will use the Self Driving Cars in a wide range of services such as:
driver-less taxis They’ll transport packages and raw materials from city to city. And they’ll deliver groceries, meals, and packages to homes and apartments across the country.
Already, the major car companies are working on new technologies to enter the Self Driving Cars race, and they implement techniques like auto parking in cars that they already sell to the customers these days, and there are companies like “Tesla” they have a feature in their car called autopilot once enabled the car will be moving automatically and change lanes and speed according to the traffic and once you arrived at your destination it will start searching for a parking spot and self-park.
But what is the question that has to ring a bell in our minds:
Are the self-driving cars safe?
Can we really trust a machine in our lives?
In a survey made by American Cars Association about %70 of people said that they don’t trust self-driving cars and they not going to be as good as a human driving the car, but if we look at the number of accidents that happened by human mistake we can give the self-driving cars a chance, also the big car companies are going to risk their reputation and people lives.
And in the meanwhile, we will have to wait and see what’s going to happen in the future of the self-driving cars and hope for the best.
